The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 5.02, or 0.5 percent, to 1,096.78. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose 5.51, or 0.25 percent, to 2,210.80.
The New York Stock Exchange composite index rose 42.52 to 7,073.13. The American Stock Exchange composite index rose 1.90 to 1,822.21. And the Russell 2000 index rose 0.99 to 618.11.
