Danes, Finns, Swedes and Norwegians sent more than 161 million text messages on New Year"s Eve, major Nordic telecommunication operators said Friday, reporting an overall record, according to dpa. Swedish group Tele 2 reported that 32 million text messages were sent from New Year"s Eve until 9 am on New Year"s Day, equalling on average nine text messages per subscriber. In 2008, the group reported 28.4 million text messages sent during the corresponding period. Rival Finnish-Swedish group Telia Sonera said some 26.5 million text messages were transmitted in its Swedish network from 6 am on Thursday until 6 am on Friday - an increase by 2.5 million text messages on 2008. Norway"s largest telecommunications group Telenor was the only major operator to record a drop in messages, registering 28.13 million compared to the record 30 million sent in 2008, news agency NTB reported.
