Nine people, including at least six children, were killed in an apartment fire in Starkville, Mississippi. State fire marshal Mike Chaney said the pre-dawn fire happened at an apartment complex along a highway. Oktibbeha County coroner Michael Hunt also confirmed the deaths. Starkville, home to Mississippi State University, is about 185 kilometers from the cities of Jackson, Mississippi; Birmingham, Alabama; and Memphis, Tennessee.
