Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said that Moscow and Washington have agreed on most of the issues related to a new arms control deal, AP reported. Medvedev has voiced confidence that Russia and the U.S. will be able to reach an agreement that will satisfy both parties. The deal would succeed the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction treaty, which expired on Dec. 5. Medvedev said in a live interview with the heads of Russian television stations Thursday that Moscow and Washington had failed to strike a deal by Dec. 5 as they hoped because of its complexity. He said negotiations involved some give-and-take by both sides. Medvedev said that President Barack Obama"s call for a nuclear-free world is a «good idea,» but added that it will require other nations to also cut their nuclear arsenals.
