Embattled former President Bakili Muluzi says he is retiring from politics, AP reported. Muluzi, who is 62, told reporters Wednesday he believed it was time for a change after 35 years in politics. Current President Bingu wa Mutharika had been Muluzi"s protege, but the two fell out after Mutharika was elected in 2004 and accused Muluzi of trying to block an anti-corruption drive. Their feud led to political impasse, rioting, and accusations of assassination plots. Mutharika was re-elected president and his party won decisive parliamentary control in May, when Muluzi"s party slipped from main opposition to third place. Muluzi flies to London occasionally for treatment of a back problem. He is also facing corruption charges he describes as political persecution.
