More than 2,000 passengers were stranded underground for hours _ many without heating, light or water _ after four passenger trains broke down in the Channel Tunnel, AP quoted Eurostar as saying. No injuries were reported when the trapped passengers were eventually evacuated from the 24-mile-long (38 kilometer-long) tunnel beneath the English Channel on Friday. All four trains were carrying passengers to London from Paris, and the problem forced the Eurostar service to be shut down. Eurostar said the cause of the break downs were being investigated. Chief executive Richard Brown blamed extremely low temperatures and heavy snow in northern France, but Eurostar"s chief operating officer, Nicolas Petrovic, said the company still didn"t understand how the trains broke down. Service on the train line was due to gradually resume Sunday. --SPA
