Heavy snowfalls Friday led to flight cancellations and severe traffic disruption in large parts of south-east England, causing the temporary shut-down of one of London"s busiest airports, dpa reported. Gatwick airport in Sussex, south-east of London, was closed for seven hours following overnight snowfalls, while all flights were cancelled early Friday from Luton airport, north of the British capital. Police said stranded drivers were trapped in their cars and lorries in the county of Sussex as road traffic was severely disrupted on the east coast and around London. More snow is predicted for the weekend. Blizzards caused more than 70 lorries to get stuck on a major road leading out of the port of Harwich, north-east of London. The port of Felixstowe in Suffolk was closed overnight. A series of accidents led to road closures, including connections to cross-Channel ferry ports in southern Britain. Dozens of schools remained closed for the day, as police urged people not to make car journeys unless absolutely necessary. --SPA
