Thousands of people of all ages gathered today evening to cheer US President Barack Obama, hours after he received the Nobel Peace Prize, according to dpa. Police estimated at least 10,000 people gathered in front of the Grand Hotel to cheer and applaud the president and First Lady Michelle Obama when they made a brief appearance at a balcony of the hotel, protected by bullet-proof glass, in central Oslo. After a few minutes, the Obamas left to attend a banquet in honour of the US president at the same hotel, with 250 guests including King Harald and Queen Sonja. The revellers were also joined by demonstrators. Many people carried burning torches and placards calling for nuclear disarmament. A second protest was staged by protesters urging an end to the war in Afghanistan.
