Finnish-based mobile phone maker Nokia said today it had filed a complaint in a US court against Apple, the maker of the iPhone, over alleged patent infringements, according to dpa. The case was filed with the Federal District Court in Delaware, US, and alleged that "Apple"s iPhone infringes Nokia patents for GSM, UMTS and wireless LAN (WLAN) standards," the statement said. The patents covered areas like wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption. The infringements dated back to 2007 when Apple started selling the iPhone, a rival to Nokia"s so-called smart phones. Nokia, the world"s largest maker of mobile telephones, said it had invested more than 40 billion euros (59 billion dollars) in research and development during the past 20 years. "The basic principle in the mobile industry is that those companies who contribute in technology development to establish standards create intellectual property, which others then need to compensate for," Ilkka Rahnasto of Nokia said in a statement. A week ago, Nokia reported a loss for third-quarter 2009, the first in a decade.
