The Maldivian cabinet held an underwater cabinet meeting Saturday, in a bid to draw international attention to fears that their nation would be hit by rising sea levels, officials in Male said, according to dpa. President Mohamed Nasheed, Vice President Mohamed Waheed and 12 members of the cabinet approved a statement calling for rapid greenhouse gas reductions to be agreed at UN climate change talks in Copenhagen in December this year. The Maldives, the world's lowest-lying nation, sees rising sea levels as a consequence of climate change as a significant threat. The ministers had undergone scuba diving lessons with the assistance of the Divers Association of Maldives before undertaking the meeting.
