Six sharks were spotted near Cape Cod, Mass., in the span of two days this week, UPI quoted a shark expert as saying. Greg Skomal, a state Division of Marine Fisheries shark expert, confirmed a shark, possibly a great white shark, was spied near the shore of Monomoy Island in Cape Cod Friday, CNN reported Saturday. The confirmed sighting came after Skomal reported as many as five unconfirmed sightings in the area around the island Thursday. Massachusetts Department of Energy and Environmental Affairs press secretary Lisa Capone said the shark sightings prompted warnings for visitors to area beaches during the Labor Day weekend. No beach closures were reported, however. Officials in nearby Chatham, Mass., said they would shut down area beaches if a shark is spotted. CNN said since 1670, Massachusetts has only recorded four shark attacks. Two of those attacks, including one in 1936, were fatal.
