Taiwan is reporting nearly 2,100 A/H1N1 influenza cases a day, Xinhua quoted local disease control authorities as saying. Nearly 40,000 people on the island, or about 0.17 percent of its total population, had been infected so far, but were mostly showing minor symptoms, health official Yang Chih-liang said. Of 47 patients who had so far been in "serious condition", five had died and 10 were hospitalized, disease control director Kuo Hsu-sung said. Most of the A/H1N1 flu patients would gradually recover if they took the necessary medicine and only a small number had been admitted to hospital, Kuo said. Several cases of group infection have been reported on the island, mostly in schools. These have been forced to close entirely or partly suspend operations. So far, nearly 2,000 people worldwide have died of the flu and tens of thousands have been infected by the virus, according to a report released by the World Health Organization on Aug. 21.
