A series of suicide bombers on bicycles targeted police officers throughout the Russian republic of Chechnya Friday, leaving numerous dead and wounded, reported the Interfax news agency, according to dpa. Interfax, citing government officials, reported five separate attacks in which a suicide bomber on a bicycle approached police officers before detonating themselves. The attacks left at least four policemen dead within a half hour, as well as the five attackers. There were no exact figures on the number of wounded. The attack comes four days after a suicide bombing on a police headquarters in Nazran, in the adjoining Russian republic of Ingushetia, left at least 25 dead and more than 200 wounded. Throughout 2009, Islamist rebels have dramatically stepped up their attacks on Russian forces, routinely attacking police officers and killing or severely wounding several high ranking officials in the region.
