A government official says at least 13 people have died in floods caused by heavy monsoon rains in northwest Pakistan, AP reported. Khalid Khan Omarzai, the top government official in the Mardan and Swabi districts, says the rains flooded drains passing through villages, sweeping away scores of mud houses and damaging hundreds more. He said he had received reports Sunday that some people might be missing, but he did not say how many. Mardan and Swabi hosted the majority of some 2 million people who were displaced by an army offensive against the Taliban in the nearby Swat Valley and its neighboring districts. That offensive has been winding down, and many of the displaced have returned home.
