Pakistan on Tuesday said it subscribes to the goals of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, and to promote this objective in an equitable and non-discriminatory manner, Pakistan has always played an active and constructive role in the Conference on Disarmament (CD) in Geneva. “It is in the same spirit that Pakistan joined the consensus on the Programme of Work of the CD in May 2009,” a press statement issued here by the office of Foreign Office Spokesman said. Pakistan, the statement said, believes that in implementing its work programme, the CD should pay equal attention to all issues on its agenda, particularly the four core issues i.e. nuclear disarmament, negative security assurances, prevention of arms race in outer space and fissile material treaty. In the discussions relating to the implementation of the programme of work, Pakistan has underscored the need for ensuring balance in terms of progress and substantive outcomes on all the aforementioned issues. The objective of global and regional peace and security can be achieved by adopting a balanced approach between non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament, the statement was quoted as saying by The Associated Press of Pakistan.
