A police official says 43 people have been killed in landslides triggered by heavy rain in northern India. Paramilitary force commander S.M. Shamim says 20 bodies have been pulled from the debris after the landslide Saturday buried three remote villages in Uttarakhand state. He says 43 people «were buried alive under the debris.» The Associated Press quoted Shamim as saying that police and volunteers have been digging through mud and rocks Sunday to recover the bodies of 23 others.
