Federal prosecutors say a Canadian citizen born in Iraq has pleaded guilty to making a false statement in connection with an immigration matter, according to dpa. Forty-eight-year-old Mouyad Mahmoud Darwish entered the plea Friday in U.S. District Court in Baltimore. He will be sentenced Oct. 23. Darwish had been charged with conspiracy to act as an agent for a foreign government. According to his plea agreement, Darwish worked at the Iraqi Interests Section (ISEC) within the Algerian Embassy and then at the Iraqi Embassy. According to the plea deal, Darwish's job at the ISEC was arranged by Saubhe Jassim Al-Dellemy, an Iraqi national and member of the Baath Party. Prosecutors say during his time at the ISEC and Embassy, Darwish took direction from government officials within the establishments.
