A German man tried to board a plane at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport with a loaded gun in his hand luggage, a Dutch police spokesman said on Friday, calling the act "stupid." The man was on his way to Aberdeen, Scotland. The airport's security staff discovered the gun during hand luggage control and arrested the man, according to dpa. Police said he gave various explanations about why he had a gun with him. The man had no license for the weapon, police said, adding the gun was most likely stolen. The German was released from custody on Thursday, as the judge ruled there were no signs the man was planning to use the weapon. He will however remain a suspect and be prosecuted for illegal weapon possession. The police spokesman said it is very rare for passengers to try to board a plane with a loaded gun. "This is very stupid, to say the least," the spokesman said.
