Some 49 per cent more companies declared bankruptcy in Poland in the first half of 2009 than in the same period last year, dpa cited a report as saying today. Some 290 companies went bankrupt in the first two quarters of 2009, versus 195 bankruptcies filed in the first half of 2008, said the report from credit insurer Euler Hermes. The bankruptcies will mean unemployment for at least 24,000 people, the report said. Most of the bankruptcies were declared in Poland's central Masovia region, and a majority hit the production and service sectors.
