Greek authorities say a very strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude 5.9 has occurred off the island of Crete, but no injuries or damage have been reported. The Athens Geodynamic Institute says the undersea quake struck at 12:30 p.m. (0930 GMT) some 280 miles (450 kilometers) southeast of Athens. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake as being of magnitude 6.7. Greece is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world, The Associated Press reported.
