The military says five Philippine marines have been killed and 10 wounded in an ambush by militants holding an Italian Red Cross worker on a southern island. Marines spokesman Lt. Col. Egard Arevalo was quoted as saying by The Associated Press that about 40 gunmen attacked a group of marines and special operations police on maneuvers near Parang township on Jolo island on Saturday. One police officer also was wounded in the ensuing gunbattle.
