Canadian National Defense officials announced a new military unit with a mandate to respond to potential threats in the arctic, according to UPI. The new Canadian defense unit, called the Arctic Response Company Group, has been formed with infantry and rifle regiments including the Voltigeurs de Quebec, the Royal New Brunswick Regiment, the Grey and Simcoe Foresters, and the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, Canadian National Defense reported. The Arctic Response Company Group has been mandated with the responsibility to ensure security in the arctic as the region experiences more government and commercial traffic because of shorter lengths of time with solid ice. "We'll have a huge responsibility in the Arctic Response Company Group because the expectations for our brigade will be high," Lt. Col. Jean-Francois Bedard, Voltigeurs commander, said in a statement.
