A moderately strong 4.7 earthquake hit the Los Angeles, California area on Sunday night. The earthquake hit about three miles east of Los Angeles International Airport, according to a preliminary report by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). At least five smaller aftershocks had followed by early Monday, with the largest registering at magnitude-3.1 just minutes after the initial quake. The quake shook the greater Los Angeles region for about 10 to 15 seconds and was felt as far south as San Diego, said USGS seismologist Susan Hough. “This was a serious jolt. It was probably felt within 100 miles,” Hough said. The last damaging earthquake in Southern California was the 6.7 magnitude Northridge quake in 1994 that toppled bridges and buildings.
