A senior diplomat says the U.N. Security Council will be assessing efforts to bring stability to the central Africa region of the Great Lakes. Uganda's U.N. Ambassador Ruhakana Rugunda says this will be the focus of talks Sunday with officials in Rwanda, the next stop on the council's Africa trip, and Congolese officials Monday. Congo and Rwanda are part of the Great Lakes region. The presence in eastern Congo of extremist Hutus who carried out Rwanda's 1994 genocide has been a source of tension between the neighbors. Congo and Rwanda have previously accused each other of supporting the other's rebel groups. But this year they have conducted joint operations against the rebels.
