U.S. federal drug officials say Mexican drug cartels are spreading south into Central America as they are pressured by increased law enforcement along the U.S.-Mexico border. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) chief of operations Thomas Harrigan said the two countries' crackdown is pushing some cartels south. There have been significant seizures of cartel weapons in Guatemala, and DEA officials say they are seeing gun battles among Mexican cartels operating in Guatemala and Honduras. President Barack Obama will travel to Mexico on Thursday. To help combat the cartels, he has pledged to deploy 500 more federal agents to the border.
