Gunmen sprayed a Lebanese army unit on Monday with bullets and rocket-propelled grenades in eastern Lebanon, killing four soldiers, said the state news agency. The ambush on a major road near the town of Rayak comes after a recent push by Lebanese troops to crack down on the drug trade in the Bekaa Valley and carried the hallmarks of a revenge attack by clansmen, Associated Press reported. Authorities said recently the army launched a campaign in the area, targeting members of a powerful clan. A Lebanese TV station said the ambush was a direct result of the crackdown, suggesting the attack was not politically motivated.
