A federal grand jury has indicted a San Francisco Bay area woman on charges of illegally importing guitar picks made from endangered sea turtle shells, according to AP An unsealed today said that 54-year-old Qing Song imported the picks or raw shells of the Hawksbill sea turtle from China for sale. Some musicians covet the shells instead of plastic picks because they believe they produce a superior tone. It is illegal in the United Staes to trade endangered wildlife without a valid permit for scientific research or other approved, noncommercial use. Song is charged with two misdemeanors and a felony count of trading in endangered species.
