The United States has lent its support for Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen to take over the post of secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, dpa quoted sources in the military alliance as saying today in Brussels. According to the sources, the US backed the positions of Germany, France, and Britain on Rasmussen's succeeding current officeholder Jaap de Hoop Scheffer in July. It is uncertain whether Rasmussen will actually take up the post. A decision must be agreed by all 26 members of NATO, and according to diplomats, Turkey has particular objections to Rasmussen.
