The European Union will ask France to explain the decision of car maker Renault SA to move excess production from its Slovenia plant to France, AP reported. European Commission spokesman Jonathan Todd says that the EU's competition authorities find it «surprising» that a French government industry official linked the move to a decision to provide billions in aid to struggling French carmakers. The move announced Friday by Renault raised concerns about protectionism at an EU summit in Brussels. Todd said the decision seemed an «apparent contradiction» after France promised three weeks ago that there would be no link between the aid and the location of Renault's production. The EU approved the French bailout based on those conditions.
