Some of the main players in the troubled Middle East peace process headed to Brussels today evening for talks with European Union leaders, amidst ongoing efforts to heal the breach between the two main Palestinian factions, according to dpa. Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit, his Palestinian counterpart Riad Malki, and Jordan's ambassador to the EU, Ahmad Masa'deh, were set to brief top EU officials on the current state of negotiations between the secular Palestinian party Fatah and its bitter Islamist rival, Hamas. They were scheduled to meet the EU's top diplomat Javier Solana, together with EU Foreign Affairs Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner and Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg, whose country currently holds the EU's rotating presidency. They were also set to discuss Egypt's role in mediating between Fatah, Hamas, which the EU regards as a terrorist organization, and Israel, according to a statement from the Czech government.
