More details began to emerge Wednesday about a man who committed the worst mass shooting in Alabama history, killing 10 people before turning the gun on himself. The gunman has been identified as Michael McLendon. He had reportedly quit his job at a nearby sausage plant days before the tragedy, authorities said Wednesday. Police said they were still unsure what motivated the killing spree. McLendon's victims included all his closest family members – his mother, grandmother, uncle and two cousins. “I've been here 30 years, this is the worst thing that's ever happened in this community,” said Geneva County Sheriff Greg Ward at a news conference. The hour-long rampage began Tuesday afternoon, when McLendon set fire to his mother's house, then drove 12 miles to open fire on his uncle's front porch, killing five more people and his grandmother, who lived next door, authorities said. He then drove downtown and began shooting apparently at random, killing three more people before engaging in a shootout with police and then killing himself.
