The newly elected Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed (sworn in, January 31, 2009) has appointed Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, as new prime Minister. Sharif told reporters that he chose Omar Sharmarke as prime minister of Somalia and wishes him success in his new position. He is the son of first Somali PM and president Abdirashid Ali Shermarke (1919 - 1969), who was murdered in 1969 before a military coup d'état. He precedes Nur Hassan Hussein (in office 24 November 2007 – 13 February 2009) in this new post which has parliament's consent in today's session.
