Federal safety officials have confirmed there were birds in both engines of the US Airways jetliner that made an emergency landing in the Hudson River in New York City last month. The pilot of the jetliner reported that both engines had failed after it collided with birds just after taking off from LaGuardia Airport. All 155 people aboard the flight survived. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said an engine surge experienced by the Airbus 320 on January 13—two days before the accident—was due to a faulty temperature sensor. The sensor was replaced, and the engine was examined and found to be undamaged before being returned to service. The NTSB also said remains from both engines have been sent to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington to have the particular bird species identified.
