Firefighters worked to contain a wildfire that was burning on the edge of Australia's largest city on Thursday, with officials warning residents to stay in their homes rather than attempt to outrun the blaze, AP reported. The fire in rural Londonderry, about 40 miles (60 kilometers) northwest of Sydney, destroyed several cars and sheds, but had not burned any homes or businesses by Thursday evening, a spokesman for the New South Wales Rural Fire Service said on condition of anonymity in line with department policy. The fire has burned about 40 acres (15 hectares), and around 150 firefighters were dispatched to fight the blaze, the spokesman said. No injuries have been reported. Wildfires are a regular feature of Australia's hot summer months, occasionally burning through cities and towns with devastating results. Temperatures in the region have reached 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) over the past two days, leaving conditions ripe for fires. A cool front passing through the area Thursday wasn't helping matters, bringing erratic winds that made the fire more difficult to control, the spokesman said.
