A spokesman for President-elect Barack Obama confirmed the incoming leader will head to Canada for the first official trip of his presidency. “President-elect Barack Obama looks forward to his visit to Canada,” said spokesman Robert Gibbs said. “It will be the first foreign trip of his presidency underscoring the importance of the relationship between the United States and Canada,” he added. The office of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the visit over the weekend, but Gibbs' comments were the first official confirmation from Obama's camp. Canada is the traditional first foreign destination for incoming presidents. The country is the largest trade partner of the United States.
