Police said a militant has shot and killed an officer in Russia's southern province of Dagestan, AP reported. Police spokesman Mark Tolchinsky said Thursday the gunman attacked a police patrol near the Caspian Sea town of Buinaksk. Tolchinsky said the gunman fled after Wednesday's attack. Dagestan and other provinces that neighbor Chechnya have been destabilized by frequent attacks by militants on police and other officials. In a separate case, Russia's Interior Ministry in Chechnya said that an army officer died late Wednesday when he stepped on a booby trap near the village of Goichu in the province's southern mountains.
