The United Nations-African Union hybrid peacekeeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID) has increased its number of police advisers to 1,877 with the addition of 189 police personnel from 12 countries who will train community-policing volunteers in refugee camps, UNAMID announced on Friday. The latest police arrivals come from 12 countries, including Yemen, Jordan and Pakistan, and include 17 female officers, according to UNAMID. There are no separate refugee camps for women and girls in Darfur and gender-based violence is rampant, according to a report from Human Rights Watch, a non-governmental advocacy group. Despite the additional numbers, the UNAMID police force is still less than half its mandated strength of 3,772.
