The death toll in floods caused by heavy rain in Algeria rose to at least 30 and some 50 others were injured, Xinhua quoted the Algerian Press Service (APS) as reporting today. The floods after torrential rains hit Ghardaia province, 600 km south of Algiers, leaving 30 people dead, 50 others injured and hundreds of homes damaged, the province's official told a press briefing. Eight communes out of 13 communes, namely Ghardaia, Bounoura, El Atef, Daia Ben Dahoua, Guerarra, Berianne, Metlili and Sebsebhave having been affected by the torrential rains, the official said. Over 400 tonnes of foodstuffs have been delivered from different neighboring provinces, the official said. He added that the Interior Ministry has sent more than 200,000 blankets, a thousand tents, three mobile bakeries, 50 electricity generators and water treatment plant to the flood-stricken area. Aid workers are on the scene to help hundreds of homeless people and the army was deployed to ensure traffic and prevent looting, the APS said.
