Customs officers at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta international airport have detained a Chinese national for trying to smuggle in an assortment of jewels estimated to be worth Rp4 billion, ANTARA reported. The Chinese man, identified by his initials WC (46), arrived in a China Airlines flight from Hong Kong with the jewels hidden in a specially designed bag attached to his left leg, Didi Prayudi Sidarta, field coordinator of the customs office's intelligence unit, said on Thursday. WC did not declare the jewels he was carrying but customs officers became suspicious when they noticed his left leg moving in an awkward way. After stopping WC and frisking him, customs officers found the small bag attached to his left leg containing 198 jewelry items which included diamond-studded rings, ear studs, bracelets, pendants, neck lace beads, brooches. The entire collection which WC had intended to sell to jewelry shops in Jakarta was estimated to be worth Rp4 billion at current market prices.
