Russia will perform its obligations assumed under the Medvedev-Sarkozy plan, President Dmitry Medvedev said on Wednesday, according to Itar-Tass. “Russia has done everything of what was planned,” Medvedev said after talks with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. “We will do everything on time,” he said. Medvedev said Zapatero and he had discussed the implementation of the agreements reached with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, which call, among other things, for the deployment of a EU observer mission in areas adjacent to Abkhazia and South Ossetia by October 1. “The DEU leadership has notified us of that,” the president said. “Therefore the Russian peacekeepers will start practising interaction with the EU observers,” he said. “As we have agreed, the peacekeepers will be withdrawn from Georgia completely within the designated period of time,” the president said. Earlier, a Foreign Ministry official said Moscow welcomed the deployment of EU observers in the buffer zone adjacent to South Ossetia and Abkhazia on the Georgian side. “This is fully in line with the Medvedev-Sarkozy plan,” he said, adding, “Russia strictly adheres to this agreement.” “Russian peacekeepers will leave security zones in 10 days in accordance with this plan,” the official said.
