South African President Thabo Mbeki told the nation Sunday that he had resigned, AP reported. In a televised speech focusing on the successes and shortcomings of his presidency, Mbeki said he had handed a letter of resignation to the speaker of Parliament, Baleka Mbete. He said he would step down at a date to be determined by the National Assembly. Parliament will convene in the coming days to select an interim president to serve until elections, which are scheduled for next year.
