French fisherman in the Indian Ocean called Sunday for a French naval presence after an attack on a fishing boat by Somali pirates armed with rocket-propelled grenades, DPA reported. The tuna fishing vessel Drennec was attacked by pirates Saturday in a high speed boat in an attempt to board the ship. The vessel, crewed by mostly French and Spanish fishermen, managed to escape the pirates and curtailed its fishing activities to head to the Seychelles, the ship's captain said. Piracy along the Somali coast has been a continual problem along Somali, which has been plagued by chaos and clan-based civil war since dictator Mohamed Siad Barres was toppled in 1991. On Wednesday last week, Somali priates hijacked a South Korean cargo whip with 21 crew on board, while a German freighter was released Thrusday after being seized last month.
