A Somali clan elder said at least nine people have been killed in fighting between two rival clans in a remote village north of the capital, AP reported. Uwas Abdirahman Uwas Khalif said Friday most of the deaths were the result of a series of hit and run attacks between the Hawadle and Abgal clans. Traditional tensions in the area over scarce water and pasture have been exacerbated by hyperinflation and drought. Khalif says clan elders from El Dhere village 330 kilometers (205 miles) north of the capital had intervened after Thursday's violence and were trying to negotiate peace.
