An overnight raid early Friday killed eight militants and two civilians in western Afghanistan, an Afghan army commander said, AP reported. The raid in Farah province targeted a Taliban commander named Mullah Fazel. Ghulam Farooq Nahimi, an army commander, said Fazel was killed in the raid, though Farah's deputy governor said Fazel was alive but had serious wounds. The operation killed a woman and child in Fazel's compound, Nahimi said. He said the operation in Bakwa district involved airstrikes. Nahimi said the raid was carried out by Afghan and international troops, but a spokesman for the U.S. coalition said he had no information coalition troops were involved. The press office for NATO's International Security Assistance Force didn't answer the phone.
