Six people were shot dead on Wednesday in Washington State by a man identified as recently released from prison and suffering from a mental illness. Isaac Zamora, described by his mother as “desperately mentally ill,” turned himself into police less than three hours after his shooting spree began in northwest Washington. Zamora had recently been living in the woods, his mother said, after serving a six-month jail sentence for drug possession. Authorities said they had not yet determined what motivated his killing spree. “We're not speculating as to what happened,” said Trooper Keith Leary said. “It's too early to tell what took place at each scene.” There are eight crime scenes, which are being investigated by more than 100 people from 15 different agencies, he said. Speaking to the Associated Press, Zamora's mother said she had tried repeatedly to get help for her mentally ill son. “We're so devastated for the families,” Dennise Zamora said. “I wish it would have been him or me that was killed. That's how deeply I feel about it.” The six victims of Zamora's attack included Skagit County Sheriff's Deputy Anne Jackson, who was shot while responding to a call from Dennise Zamora. The names of other seven victims had not been released as of Wednesday morning. At least two others were wounded, including a Washington State Patrol trooper and a motorcyclist.
