The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is visiting Tunisia to strengthen cooperation between his office and the North African country before heading to Iran later this week. During his two-day visit to Tunisia, Antonio Guterres is scheduled to meet with the Tunisian president, the minister of foreign affairs, the minister of justice and human rights, the minister of national defense, and other senior government officials as well as the U.N. country team, UNHCR partners, and staff. UNHCR began operations in Tunisia in 1957 to assist several thousand Algerian refugees who had arrived in the country. Following his visit to Tunisia, Guterres will travel to Iran, where he will discuss the future of refugees there and UNHCR's mandate in Iran with the newly appointed interior minister and other top officials.
