Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel appeared to win agreement from Poland on Saturday as she continued her effort to create a united European front on the Russian-Georgian conflict, AP reported. EU leaders will hold a summit on the matter Monday in Brussels. The European Union's 27 members have been divided over how to deal with Russia since it invaded Georgia in early August. Former communist countries like Poland have tended to favor a tougher stance than Western European states. An aide to Polish President Lech Kaczynski said Kaczynski and Merkel agreed on the need to send a humanitarian mission to Georgia and the importance of supporting French President Nicolas Sarkozy's effort to resolve the conflict, the news agency PAP reported. A spokesman for Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he told Merkel he wants the EU to consider the future of Ukraine at the summit. Some in Ukraine and elsewhere in the region fear that Russia's military achievements in Georgia could embolden it to try to restore its influence in Ukraine.
