At least two people were killed and 10 wounded in an explosion Sunday in a slum in the eastern Indian city of Calcutta, AP quoted police as saying. India has been on edge following a string of deadly bombings last week, but Calcutta Commissioner of Police Gautam Mohan Chakraborty said that while the blast was caused by an explosive device, it did not appear to be connected to those attacks. The explosion occurred in a scrap yard in a north Calcutta slum, Chakraborty said. Scrap collectors apparently found a bomb, possibly left over from a conflict between rival gangs in the area, and it exploded, he said.
