The White House praised Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday for persevering on a bilateral nuclear deal. Singh was “very confident” about the deal's prospects when he met with President George W. Bush earlier this month on the sidelines of the G-8 summit in Japan, spokeswoman Dana Perino said. “Obviously, the politics in India have been tough to deal with, but he's been soldiering on and trying to build a consensus, " Perino said. Singh's government survived a confidence vote in the Indian parliament yesterday. The deal allows India to be treated as a special case on condition that it separates its civil and military programs and allows some U.N. inspections.
