A New Zealand police officer was killed Friday when he was run over by a stolen car that he was trying to stop by laying down road spikes, reported the DPA. Police alleged the driver had hijacked the car, kidnapping a 16- year-old youth who was in the vehicle with him as he drove at up to 160 kilometres an hour through suburban streets early Friday north of Wellington. Sergeant Derek Wootton, 52, died almost immediately after being hit, and the car was stopped by other police 300 metres away. A 32-year-old unemployed man faced five counts including dangerous driving causing death, aggravated robbery and kidnapping when he appeared later in court. His name was suppressed, and he was remanded in custody.
